What are betting odds? Price and probability in one number

Betting odds are the price a bookmaker puts on an outcome. They show two things at once: how much a winning bet pays back, and how likely the price rates the outcome. Illustrative example: decimal odds of 2.50 return KES 250 for a KES 100 stake, and 1 ÷ 2.50 gives an implied chance of 40%.

Betting odds are the price of a bet. The number tells you what a winning stake pays back and, read the other way round, how likely the bookmaker rates the outcome. This guide uses decimal odds, such as 1.80 or 3.25, in its examples.

Decimal odds include your stake. Multiply the stake by the odds to get the full return on a win, and divide 1 by the odds to get the implied probability. The guide on reading decimal odds and implied probability walks through both steps with more prices.

One example in shillings

Illustrative example: a home win is priced at 2.50 and you stake KES 100. If the home side wins, you get KES 250 back, which is your KES 100 stake plus KES 150 profit. If it does not win, you get nothing back.

The same price implies a chance of 1 ÷ 2.50, which is 0.40 or 40%. You can turn any price into a percentage, or into fractional odds, with the odds converter.

Why odds are not a fair forecast

Odds are a price set by a business, not a neutral estimate of the chance. Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in one market and the total comes to more than 100%. The surplus is the bookmaker's margin.

Illustrative example: a two-way market priced 1.90 and 1.90 implies 52.63% for each side, or 105.26% in total. The extra 5.26 points are the margin, worked through in bookmaker margin explained with numbers.

What the rules say about displaying odds

Regulation 23(1) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 requires a licensee to display the betting odds, rules and terms for each bet clearly. Regulation 23(2) bars a licensee from altering the terms of a bet once it has been accepted, except as the Act and the Regulations permit.

In plain terms, the odds shown when your bet is accepted form part of that bet's terms. A price that moves later, or a different price quoted by a tipster, is a separate matter.

Questions people ask

Do higher odds mean a better bet?

No. Higher odds pay more on a win because the price rates the outcome as less likely. Odds of 5.00 imply a 20% chance, so at a fair price four bets in five at those odds would lose. A bet only has value when the real chance is higher than the price implies, and nobody can know the real chance for certain.

What do odds of 1.50 mean?

Decimal odds of 1.50 return KES 150 for every KES 100 staked on a win, which is your stake back plus KES 50 profit. The implied probability is 1 ÷ 1.50, or about 66.7%. Because that price carries the bookmaker's margin, the fair chance with the margin taken out is usually a little lower than the figure the odds imply.
